Joseph O'Connor is Aedín Gormley’s guest on 'My Tunes'. His music choices link to his novel 'Ghost Light' and include 'The Last Rose of Summer' sung by Nina Simone. Ronnie Drew and The Dubliners version of 'The Twangman' also feature.

Gallous Stories and Dirty Deeds - Synge and Irish Theatre by Dr Patrick Lonergan
Patrick Lonergan lectures at NUI Galway and is Director of the Synge Summer School. He reviews theatre for 'The Irish Times' and 'Irish Theatre Magazine', and his most recent book is 'J.M. Patti Smith: Dream of Life (2008)

A documentary about the writer, artist, poet and photographer, singer and music heroine of Joseph O'Connor. As Molly was muse and collaborator to JM Synge, so too was Smith inspiration, lover and partner to Robert Mapplethorpe.

Dress in the Edwardian Era by Alex Ward, National Museum of Ireland.
  Alex Ward is curator of the costume and textiles collections in the National Museum of Ireland Decorative Arts and History, a role she has held since 2000.  She curated the exhibition Neilli Mulcahy – Irish Haute Couture of the 50s and 60s and is currently working on a forthcoming exhibition on the work of retired Dublin designer Ib Jorgensen.The National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2

Homage to Synge

Dun Laoghaire based poet Gerald Dawe follows in the footsteps of Synge, exploring the playwright's literary past and his influence and presence in Dawe's poetic view of places forever associated with Synge's name. Gerald Dawe lectures at School of English, TCD and is Director of Director of Oscar Wilde Centre for Irish Writing. Gerald Dawe has published seven collections of poetry; his 'Selected Poems' will be published in 2012.

Capital D: My Dublin, RTÉ 1 Television

Joe O'Connor will appear on Capital D: My Dublin, interviewed by Anne Cassin about the Dublin coastline that inspired 'Ghost Light' and visiting some other Dublin locations that appear in the novel.

Friday 15th April 7pm
SHIFT
, in which contemporary Irish sound and video artists, actors and musicans, will create a live, improvisatory response to the 1907 'Playboy of the Western World' riots, augmented by the digital model of the old Abbey Theatre.

Ireland's greatest woman - Scenes from the life of Lady Augusta Gregory
, a talk by Ronnie O'Gorman, chairman of the Friends of Coole and Autumn Gathering. Ronnie O'Gorman is the chairman of the Friends of Coole who champion Lady Gregory's original mission to provide an 'inspirational landscape' for the Irish Literary Movement. He is also chairman of the Autumn Gathering which explores Galway’s literary past.

A Ghost Light Walk: Edwardian Dublin - The Lives and Times of JM Synge & Molly Allgood

Guided by Pat Liddy, this walk will focus on the places and characters of Ghost Light.  The tour begins at Abbey Theatre and ends at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Join us afterwards for Curtain Call in St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Short Story Competition
To celebrate the choice of Joseph O'Connor's Ghost Light for Dublin: One City, One Book Festival 2011, Dublin City Libraries, in association with Dublin UNESCO City of Literature are running a short story competition for previously unpublished authors, which must incorporate the Ghost Light quote "He was teh sort of man who makes you think the movement of foliage might be causing the breeze". Entries of no more than 1,000 words should be submitted by email to catherine.duffy@dublincity.ie. Closing date: 8th April 2011. The winning entry* will be published on www.dublinonecityonebook.ie and www.dublincityofliterature.ie and the winner will receive a €100 book token.
* Plese note: the judge's decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Synge's Cottage (Teach Synge)

The playwright's love of the Aran Islands has been acknowledged with the opening of the Synge Museum on Inis Meáin, a beautifully restored cottage and a must for all Synge fans.
Teach Synge is open from June-September.
