I didn't actually realise 'til reading the book that it in fact a series of letters and diary entries by various characters, how unusual! This approach in a way adds a strange sense of realism, not at all like a standard work of fiction. Can't recall reading another work of fiction done like that.
Diary approach
Isn't it amazing how much more is in the book than the films? The book is just as atmospheric as the film and you get the real sense of each characters' personality through their own writings. I've told so many people to read the book. I think it's great the way one book is highlighted every year. each book has been so different - can't wait to see what next year's book will be
