Why Dracula never loses his bite - Irish Times article
An article well worth reading in this Saturday's (March 28, 2009) Irish Times by Stephen Martin.
Stephen presents an interesting view as to the reason for the lasting success of the Dracula story and the apparent rise in ithe interest in 'vampire entertainment' at various points in history.
To quote from Stephen's article,
"A significant reason for Dracula’s longevity is that Stoker personified a number of physical dreads, mostly involving an act of love that results in a living death, in his main character... much of Dracula can be seen as an almost transparent parable for (syphilis)... The explosion in vampire entertainment in the 1980s and 1990s was fuelled by an almost identical dread: Aids... vampire cinema proliferated in times of tremendous national crisis, reflecting the public’s fear of what seemed unstoppable forces of destruction and misery".
Now this view does present it in a totally new light! Agree or disagree?
